About Alexander Campbell - Richmond Co, NC to McKenzie, TN
In 1839, the Huntingdon [TN] Republican newspaper advertised a land sale to settle the estate of Stephen Pate, with some proceeds going to Alex. Campbell, in right of his deceased wife, Sally. This is the earliest confirmation found to establish the relationship between my Great-Great Grandfather, Alexander (Sandy) Campbell and his parents, Alex. Campbell and Sally Pate Campbell. The newspaper article named the children of Stephen Pate as Stephen S., Richmond L., John, Elijah, Elisha, Duncan, Elizabeth (married Nathan Hawthorne), Hannah (married Ely Eli), Daniel (deceased), and Sally (married Alexander Campbell and deceased at the time of the writing).
In September 1841, Carroll County Court Records show that Richmond Love Pate (b. 1814) was made guardian of Philip (b 1822 NC), Alexander (b 1826 NC), Daniel (b 1832 TN), and Margaret Campbell (b 1835 TN), the children of Alex. Campbell and Sally Pate Campbell, which suggests that Alex. Campbell had died.
My Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Alexander Campbell was born in North Carolina. We have a good source for this fact. The 1880 census records listed the places-of-birth for the heads-of-households' parents. Alex. Campbell's son Alexander (Sandy) Campbell listed the place-of-birth of both his parents as NC. Alex. Campbell's sons, Daniel P. and Philip also named the place of birth of both parents as NC in the same census. Stephen Pate was on the Richmond County, NC census from 1790 through 1830. He apparently moved to McKenzie, TN with Alexander and Sally in about 1831.
Who were the parents of Alex. Campbell?
